OK. Stupid Giants owner, or whoever is in charge of making decisions
there. I really bitched about how the Giants didn't try to improve
this off season by trying to acquire anyone halfway decent.
Especially some pitching.

OK. That's past. But now, I just don't understand their objection -
their claim of ownership, of the south bay (San Jose). (& BTW which
I believe is now the largest city in the bay area.) The Giants say
they own the south bay and San Jose can't acquire a major league team.

What's stupid about it is that it is so damned far to go from here
(San Jose) to go see a Giants game, it isn't worth it. They've moved
even farther away with the new ballpark. Plus now, there is very
little & very expensive parking. The stadium is designed for people
who get there other than by a car they have to park. So you've got to
take the train. So how just how many San Joseans are going to see the
Giants on a regular basis? How many hours does it take to get there
and back?

Jeeeez if San Jose got the A's, the Giants would have all of the east
bay to draw from. & those would-be gamers are very much closer to
the Giants stadium, and a lot more of them would go see some games
than those going from San Jose right now... What is it? - a couple
of minutes to cross the bay bridge, and there is the stadium right on
the other side.. It's as if they built it just so east bayers would
have easy access.

I'd sure like to see at least a couple of ML games a year. But I
don't have any friends anymore still living here, and spending 3 hours
getting to & back from a Giants game just is not what I am going to do
anyway.

Selig has proven his word is worth nothing. Watch the Expos. If they
end up in DC, against the wishes of the Orioles' owner, then you can
damn well bet that the Giants will be treated similarly should MLB
become convinced that San Jose is the best (read: most profitable)
option. MLB is not a democracy.

Wow, a whole 5 minutes.

Actually there's quite a bit of parking on Townsend, you'll have to walk a bit though.

This makes no sense at all.

Like that's such a bad thing? Pretty nice really, read the paper or visit
during the ride and let someone else drive. I like taking the train.

60% of season ticket holders are south of the San Mateo county line, and
lord only knows how many of the luxury suites are held by South bay firms.
Now if the A's went south to SJ, they'd bring their EBay fans AND get a
bunch of new fans in SJ and all those luxury suites that are now in SF. If
the Giants ownership group did relinquish their S.Bay rights, then they'd be
Stupid, no worse, they'd be suicidal.

Why yes. How DARE those dastardly Giants owners build us a beautiful,
privately funded ballpark! How dare they put it close to downtown,
rather than off in the boonies like Candlestick! How dare they make it
public transit accessible! How dare they not landfill in half the bay
so Big Mac can get easy, cheap parking! Why, I surely miss the days
when going to Candlestick meant either sitting in traffic for eons or
taking BART to Balboa Park, then taking Muni through Hunter's Point.
It sure does **** now that Pac Bell Park is easily accessible via
public transit from the East Bay, Downtown San Francisco, and San
Mateo County, and accessible via ferry from Marin County and the East
Bay. HOW DARE YOU YOU STUPID BASTARDS!!!!

My take...

MLB and the Giants hated Candlestick Park, with legitimate reason. It is
a terrible baseball facility for both fans and players. The Giants hated
playing there and every team in the NL hated going there during the
season. Even when the Giants were playing well attendance ****ed because
the conditions were so bad.

Before Pac Bell Park was built Santa Clara county was open territory. In
theory, a third MLB team could have moved into San Jose, without
infringing on the territorial rights of either the A's or the Giants. Of
course MLB would never have approved it, but in theory they could have.

The Giants were awarded territorial rights to Santa Clara County SOLELY
for the purpose of pressuring San Francisco on a new ballpark. Once
ground was broken on Pac Bell Park the Giants should have relinquished
those right or had them removed by MLB. That the Giants continue to harp
on their "rights" to the South Bay and 'Sellout' Selig supports them is
hypocrisy at its worst. If the A's or a potential South Bay stadium
group files an anti-trust lawsuit you'll see MLB fold in a heartbeat and
Peter M can go cry to himself in a corner.

I think this is wrong. Major League Baseball is exempt from federal
antitrust laws. As the law presently stands, MLB has nothing to fear from
an anti-trust lawsuit.
