Default Atkins diet

A lady in work is doing it, and she says it works great.

Any of y'all have an opinion?

You lose weight short term, its not healthy in the long term as you only eat fat and not carbs.

Take a look at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3104871.stm Good news for all of us.

For what? Half will say its good, the other half won't. My doctor loves it,
but other doctors hate it. Most that hate it do so out of ignorance or a
lack of acknowledgement to scientific studies that prove it both safe and
effective.

I dropped 35 on it in a hurry and still eat low carb and haven't put
anything back on. No adverse side affects. I eat plenty of fruit, geggies,
and salad. In fact, I eat more of that stuff on Atkins than I ever did
before.

It all comes down to common sense. Sugar and white flour aren't good for you
no matter how you slice it. Whether or not you eat steak and eggs and
cheese, there is still no reason to eat processed foods or sugar/white
flour. They are the main items that need to be avoided.

Did it a couple years back, lost 40lbs, hit a plateau, got tired of it, ate
ice cream. Coincidentally, I'm so disgusted with myself now that I plan on
restarting it on Monday. One last weekend of free-eatin'. Definitely taking
a trip to Bruster's for at least a double scoop in a waffle cone.

You hear all the unsafe claims with barely any studies that prove it
out...the diet's been around since the late 60s right? Shouldn't there be
some sort of historical evidence to it's long term effect on people?

Everything I have read and heard about it say that eating one thing with carbs in ruins the whole diet, so anything like pizza,
bread, chips, crisps are out of the question.

Maybe I got it wrong, with the Atkins diet you stop eating carbs to fool your body into going into starvation mode and it starts to
burn all your body fat. Eating one thing with a lot of carbs brings you body out of this mode so you have to restart again which
takes days.

Starvation mode burns muscle not fat. The Atkins diet transforms your
body into a furnace for fat burning. Studies have also shown it to
reduce the bad cholesterol levels.

There was an article in the NY Times last July (which I may have posted
here a few months ago, so check deja if you're interested) that detailed
the reasons why there were no studies done -- the medical establishment
had put its reputation on a low-fat diet, and Atkins was made to be the
nutjob for going against the grain by syaing "watch the carbs". Hence,
no money for 3rd-party (i.e., not run by Dr. Atkins) studies. This is
changing and some funded 3rd-party studies are being done.
