Philadelphia Sports Teams Announcers
When I first moved to the area in late 1986, although the only team I
became a fan of was the Phillies, I noticed that three of the four major
pro/major league level teams had what I considered to be excellent radio
(and sometimes T.V.) announcers.
The Flyers had Gene Hart (SCORE!).
The Eagles had and still have Merrill Reese.
The Phillies had a whole slew of them - Richie Ashburn, Harry Kalas
(OUTTA HERE), and Chris Wheeler were my favorites. And I still like BOTH
Kalas and Wheeler a lot - about equally. I have never gotten used to
having Larry Andersen instead of Richie Ashburn. I didn't care all that
much for Andy Musser, but I think I prefer him to Scott Graham.
The 76ers have not had anyone notable during my years here, but I
understand that someone named Dave whose last name started with "Z" died
just about a year before I came here. I don't know if he "died in
office" like Ashburn did or was already retired. Apparently this Dave
guy was quite legendary in this town.
I preferred Merrill Reese's former sidekick, Stan Walters, to the one he
has now. I know it's a retired Eagle from the Vermeil era, possibly
Wilbert Montgomery or Mike Quick.
I hear so much about someone named By Saam, but he was before my time.
I am sorry to hear about the troubles between Harry and "Wheels" because
I like both of them, and I like them about equally.
