Default Philadelphia Sports Teams Announcers

When I first moved to the area in late 1986, although the only team I
became a fan of was the Phillies, I noticed that three of the four major
pro/major league level teams had what I considered to be excellent radio
(and sometimes T.V.) announcers.

The Flyers had Gene Hart (SCORE!).

The Eagles had and still have Merrill Reese.

The Phillies had a whole slew of them - Richie Ashburn, Harry Kalas
(OUTTA HERE), and Chris Wheeler were my favorites. And I still like BOTH
Kalas and Wheeler a lot - about equally. I have never gotten used to
having Larry Andersen instead of Richie Ashburn. I didn't care all that
much for Andy Musser, but I think I prefer him to Scott Graham.

The 76ers have not had anyone notable during my years here, but I
understand that someone named Dave whose last name started with "Z" died
just about a year before I came here. I don't know if he "died in
office" like Ashburn did or was already retired. Apparently this Dave
guy was quite legendary in this town.

I preferred Merrill Reese's former sidekick, Stan Walters, to the one he
has now. I know it's a retired Eagle from the Vermeil era, possibly
Wilbert Montgomery or Mike Quick.

I hear so much about someone named By Saam, but he was before my time.

I am sorry to hear about the troubles between Harry and "Wheels" because
I like both of them, and I like them about equally.

dipshit. I hope you are a troll. I pray there is nobody who has to go
through life as stupid as you appear to be.

There is no reason for this terribly unkind and malicious post. Ms. Litman
has posted here many times, and her contributions, including this one, are
always thoughtful and sincere. On the other hand, your offensive and vile
post has no place in this NG, any NG, or polite conversation anywhere.
Please go spew your hate elsewhere.

Yes they have--the Sixers' radio announcer for the past seven or eight
years, Tom McGinnis, is great.

It's gotten to the point where I turn off the TV sound and put on the
radio for Sixers games, just like for the Eagles. I haven't gotten to
the point of switching from TV to radio for innings 4-6 for the Phils
yet, but then again Todd Kalas isn't on there anymore.

I concur with the poster. McGinnis is fabulous, imo. Plus, the guy works
alone. He does it all and does a fantastic job.

Plus, he managed to snare Robin Reiger, which is quite a nice piece of
tushy. :-)

You do know I was mimicing his signature call, right?
