This is the real biter of the new rules. When down a man, especially in OT
situations, you have two choices. You can let the opposition move to the net
at will, or you can pretty much try to grab, shove, or get a stick on them
which is going to win you another man down. Just seems like an almost
endless cycle in OT. Glad to get a point out of it, Sid got another goal
and assist, and Caron was lights out! Can't blame MAF too much, he was
bombarded.

I really hate to say this but while listening to ESPN radio the other day I
heard Madden say that Orpik is just too dumb to play in the new NHL, Brooks
hasn't really done much in his defense to disprove that. He and Odelein are
a liability right now with some of the dumb ass penalties they are taking.

My highs for the game are 1. the comeback in general 2. Caron's highlight
reel save.
Lows: 1. Defense is still losing us games early 2. Penalties.

Don't even bother listing penalties, man. saying "too many penalties" and
"NHL" in the same sentence is just redundant.

Odelein made a few good D Plays tonight. Orpik had a few good hits. He
still can't find position in front of the net, though. I can't fault
anyone for taking penalties. Apparently, this year, farting in a players
general direction will land ya in the bin (thanks to Python for that line).

You neglected to mention Talbot's center ice goal, though. That was a
serious "WTF?" moment.

I don't mean just the general BS penalties but C'mon. Orpik getting up and
taking a shot at a Flyer after it was clear there was no initial penalty was
just stupid.

is sebastian caron emerging as the penguins best goalie ?? this guy
has played unbelievable this year. not only tonight's diving glove
save at the line vs. philly, but did you see the similar save vs.
carolina? only difference was he dove backward toward the other side
and got the shaft of his stick on what looked like a sure empty net
goal. amazing.

odelein seems like the only guy capable of getting the puck out of the
penguins' zone. how sad is that. he's the only real defensive minded
guy they've got. am i missing someone? jackman's played alright i
guess and gonchar hasn't lived up to $5mill per year even if he hasn't
been all together awful-- except on offense; and picking up the extra
penalty in OT tonight. although you make a great point about the damned
if you do--damned if you don't reality of being man down in the new NHL
in OT.

hate to say it but crosby took a pretty bad penalty with 12 seconds
left; he's just an 18 year old kid though and he'll learn from
tonight's painful mistake.

I agree with that.
I've always hated undisciplined penalties.
Take the hit... and the number. There's a time and place.

yup. Although, in the credit where credit is due dept., MAF has looked
pretty good. He got sheeled tonight, but it was some pretty goal scoring
where the Pens D was (as usual) out to lunch. this guy

To be honest, I was the guy getting hammered for being not all too
thrilled when Gonchar was signed. Not because he's bad, because he
certainly is not. His scoring WILL happen. I was a proponent of signing
some defensive minded d men... oddly enough, Gonchar has exceled in that
respect. He's on the PK lines and playing well there. I think everyone
on offense is still waiting for everyone else to score... except for
Ziggy, who is a guy I really like anyway.

and picking up the extra

I was expecting him to be hammered with a delay of game call too, when he
knocked the net off the mooring. I find room to f****ve Sid, because he
IS young and he DOES hustle. It's some of the other ridiculous penalties
they've been taking. I fault the NHL and the OVER enforcement of hooking
and holding quite often, but in complete honesty, the Pens haven't
exactly been disciplined.
