In his article, Smith writes: "The Lakers now fear trading Bryant, but
that could change if they believe they'll lose him. One popular option
for Bryant as a free agent is the Spurs, who will be well under the
salary cap after the season. They've been saving money to re-sign Manu
Ginobili, but would give it to Bryant, who would team with Tim Duncan
and could come back and beat O'Neal and the Lakers."
The question, according to Ford, is whether the Spurs would have
enough money to sign Kobe.
"A couple of things would have to happen first," explains Ford. "One,
the cap would have to rise from $43.8 million to $45 million next
year. Most league ****ysts feel this is a good possibility. Second,
the Spurs would have to renounce their rights to free agents Emmanuel
Ginobili and Hedo Turkoglu. Third, the team would have to decline its
second-year option on Robert Horry's contract."
