Are Millen or Mariucci working with the 49ers, Tony?

<shrug> They used to. Personally I think Millen got hosed on this
deal. IIRC he tried to interview some minority candidates but they
declined the opportunity.

Exactly right. He called 3 -5 AC's and NONE wanted to try for the job
because they felt Mooch was a lock. Would the league, Mr. Coch(roach)ran,
Jesse Jack(off)son or anyone else care to tell me how you force someone to
accept an interview?

Millen made a good faith effort to interview other candidates, they declined
his overtures. What was he suppossed to do just offer the job through
Detroit's local unemployment service to try and get minority candidates in
for an interview?

My guess is that those minority coaches turned Millen down because they
resented being treated as tokens. Unfortunately, this was probably an
unavoidable byproduct of the whole campaign to pressure teams into
interviewing minority candidates. How do you ensure teams look at minorities
while at the same time ensuring that they're not just "going through the
motions"? I'm not sure of the correct solution here.

But I have no doubt whatsoever that minority coaches in general have a
legitimate beef. Just look at Notre Dame--they practically interviewed ME
before they decided to call Tyrone Willingham.

So how many minority candidates did Jerruh seriously consider before
hiring the Tuna? Not that the league is biased in favor of Dallas or
anything.

I agree with your points here. I think one of the first things you have to
do is ensure a phone interview is not enough (a'la Dallas). Second, if you
are going to growl about the lack of opportunities, shouldn't every chance
be grabbed at? Of course they felt like tokens, Mooch was the clear
favorite. What are you going to do when that happens? It will happen
again. Some coach, (Gruden again, Reid, Holmgren, etc) will come available,
and some down and out franchise will target them as their number 1 choice.
It is unavoidable. Perhaps, if they wish this to in fact be fair then the
candidates should be required to accept interviews, rather than being able
to pick and choose. Since the real issue seems to be about numbers and not
anything else. Also, just curious, but how did Jax get away with the Del
Rio hiring with so little press flak?

I agree with your point here too. There are many instances where there has
been no good faith on the part of a hiring institution or franchise to
pursue all the best candidates regardless of race. But it is equally unjust
to punish someone who did make a good faith effort and was rebuked by the
people he contacted. At what point is it unreasonable to expect a franchise
to continue their search. Any sense of tokenism is the fault of the media
and the league offices for how this has been handled.

One, via phone interview, deemed to have been enough of a good faith gesture
by the league. Millen phones 3 - 5 AC's for interviews and they all decline
and his good faith is not considered enough. Totally uncool.
