Sure, Collison's toughness is questioned. Ridnour's defense is suspect. But
how many players out of college (or high school) arrive in the NBA as
complete players? Sonics general manager Rick Sund says college ball is
twice as hard as high school, and pro ball is three times harder than
college.
Choosing players on gut feel and intuition is harder still. Maybe not as
scary as in the previous century, when team honchos might look at a Street &
Smith's compilation of college talent and make a selection with fingers
crossed. Today there are individual workout sessions and game films and
reams of data to consider. But no one ever knows how it will turn out, not
even **** Vitale. For every Gary Payton there's a Bobby Jackson or two. Or
three.
