I have been reading the discussion on wheel bearings and grease, and it
occurred to me that my new skates are a 2002 model. That means they have
been lying on their sides in a box for at least a year. Is there something
I should do prior to using these skates to lube the bearings or otherwise
prepare them? Wouldn't some of the grease have settled to one side or
something?

Spin the wheels and see what happens.
One person has said that they had a problem with the bearings on old skates.
I have bought 2 year old skates with the bearings being in perfect
condition.

Don't expect the wheels to spin freely, that frequently doesn't happen even
with brand new bearings. Many bearings need a little time (could be weeks
of skating) to push excess lubricant away from the balls so that they roll
freely with no weight on them.

The bearings should not feel gritty or notchy when you turn them.

You may have grease, or Gel, or oil. You won't know until you open a
bearing and take a look inside.
