Default Jose Lima & Jeff Suppan...

Supposedly the Cardinals are after these two (according to Espn.com).

It seems to me, these are the sort of pitchers that don't do well in
St. Louis - the sort that give up a whole of home runs (not that they
do very well, anywhere).

I guess Suppan would be the better choice, since he is generally
average, while Lima is usually much worse (or for a couple years in
his career, 5 years ago, better).

I know I've said this before, but I think the Cardinals are doomed to
another year of mediocrity next year...

I kinda like Suppan. We could expect 200 innings of slightly above
average pitching from him. Lima only works if they move the fences back
a hundred feet or so. Maybe they got "Lima" confused with "Livan". This
is ESPN after all, the people who predicted the Cardinals would sign Maddux and Alomar.

According to those guys, the Cardinals have re-signed Chris Carpenter.
There is no mention on mlb.com, howver, so maybe CBS got Chris Carpenter
and Bob Carpenter confused. Probably not. Mediocrity is one thing,
making the same mistakes as in 2003 to get that mediocrity is another.

I thought signing Carpenter was smart and, money depending, remains
smart. He's shown that, when healthy, he can be very good. There was a
chance he could regain his health last year to be able to
relieve...didn't quite happen, but another year removed from surgery,
it's more likely now.

But of course shoulder surgery for a starter is not something that bodes
well for long-term health, especially with the Cardinals. Apparently the
shouler problems were aggravated when he really let it fly in front of
LaRussa and Duncan, which captures the heart of the problem perfectly.

I do not see what the big deal is with Carpenter, even if healthy. He
has never had an ERA below 4.00, and in 2000 he got shelled. By all
accounts he has "great stuff", which makes him sound like a cross
between Brett Tomko and Rick Ankiel. I would rather try my hand with
Haren and Hawksworth.

The link says 1 year at $500K. No mention of options, etc. It seems
strange that the Cardinals have not announced it yet.

I heard this on KMOX - it seems like a couple of days ago now. They
were saying 1 year at $500K, as you say, and incentives that could add
up to as much as $1 million. They also, IIRC, mentioned an option for
next year.
