Will he get fined and suspended by the baseball commissioner like John
Rocker did? At least Rocker apologized.
Baker reiterates comments
July 8, 2003
CHICAGO (AP) — Cubs manager Dusty Baker didn’t back down Monday when
asked about his recent comments that black and Latin players were
better suited to play in the heat than white players.
“I meant what I said. … I try to be as honest as possible, and if
that’s how I feel, then that’s how I feel.” he told reporters before
Monday’s game, a 6-3 win by the Cubs over Florida.
On Saturday, in another pregame talk with reporters, Baker said: “We
were brought over here for the heat. Isn’t that history? Your skin
color is more conducive to heat than it is to the lighter-skinned
people. I don’t see brothers running around burnt.”
Those comments have since prompted debate on radio shows and in
newspaper columns across the country.
“It doesn’t really matter to me because that’s what I said. I’m not
going to take it back,” Baker said. “What I said to you guys is what
I said to my team. I told my other teammates this a long time ago,
too. When we talk about how hot it is, I told them that’s why my
ancestors were brought over here, for that reason, and that’s history.
“My mother was a black-American history teacher in Sacramento,” he
said. “… A lot of people don’t know history, that’s what it sounds
like to me. If they take it as reverse racism … then they can take
it wherever they want to take it.”

Nothing will happen to Baker. Rocker was white and has to comply with a
completely different set of rules. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-cubs-baker&prov=ap&type=lgns

This is bullshit. Rocker’s statements were COMPLETELY different, and
you know it. Twisting the facts to fit your theories?

Rocker made angry, blatently rascist, remarks
that were far from general observations. I’m
surprised any non-white player will work with
Rocker at all. bel

His ancestors were brought over here because they were able to lift a load,
were easily dominated and tradable. If red-headed albinos were available in
mass numbers and had greedy kings willing to sell them, there would have
been more “Opie’s” and “Annie’s” picking cotton than you could shake a boll

I totally understand everybody’s sentinements. The one thing that I don’t
quite comprehend (sorry, I’m luckily not from SoCal) is why does Rome
constantly attack Dusty Baker?

The outraged white uproar about Dusty’s comments calls to mind the statement
made by Supergroup guitarist the late Mike Bloomfield, about some skinny
English white guys playing Howlin Wolf’s licks on the guitar acting superior
and cool. Mike siad, “Ok you, might be able to play Howlin Wolf licks
faster than he does now, but you’re twenty-five and he’s sixty-five years
old, but he has a fourteen-inch p****, so what are you going to do about

What???? So we can only be against racist thinking if we
aren’t white:? You want to know where my real “outrage”
comes from. It comes from the idea that Dusty is sitting
in the dug-out making decisions on who is going to play and
for how long based on some ridiculous concept that skin color
determines how well you can handle the heat. It’s stupid!
If he was basing the lineup on hair length or number of siblings
I would be just as outraged. Sure, I recognize the fact that we
let minorities get away with racist remarks without public outcry
a lot more often then we let whites do so but that’s not as big a
deal as knowing this guy is making player moves based on this

Exactly the reason why racism is so insidious anyway! To allow people to
base decisions on ignorant beliefs such as these is silly. Science has
proven that there is no real basis for the category we call race but it has
yet to reach the laymen who still believe in it. I know many light-skinned
black people that will burn more easily than some whites but because they’re
in the “black” category they get more play time? Blacks were not brought to
the US because of the heat either, they were brought to work. Period.
Like, if it had been cold but the crops would still grow the planters would
have done it themselves! Dusty Baker’s comments were ignorant and should be
exposed as such. Whether he’s black or white has nothing to do with the
ignorance of his statements.
