Very odd…heard this on a DC Sports Talk station driving today (not a
direct quote from Williams), and they haven’t mentioned it since or the
context of the quote.
Apparently involves $100,000 that Connecticut paid to some AAU team in
Baltimore, Calhoun apparently admits the transaction took place but it had
nothing to do with getting the recruit.
Amazed to see nothing mentioned about it here, or on Espn.com (that I can
I knew Williams had hated Calhoun for years, was never certain why.

The AAU team was in Baltimore – that happened to have top recruit Rudy Gay
as one of its players- who eventually signed a LOI with UConn. How does a
school like UConn legitimately give an AAU team money anyway?

play a preseason game against them.

After some searching, apparently this kid’s AAU team cobbled together a team
called the “Beltway Ballers” that had never existed before, and their ONLY
game was against Connecticut this preseason. They offered to play MD and
Conn, Conn accepted, MD did not.
The fee in the articles I’ve seen is $25,000, but the radio report I heard
was that it was $100,000.
Apparently Williams never specifically mentioned UConn but his comments made
it abundantly clear that is who he was talking about.

Somebody should ask Williams about his recruitment of Juan Dixon. I
never knew Williams was a whiner. A sweater maybe, but not a whiner.

Seeing as Williams came from BC, Williams and
Calhoun were not only coaching against each other,
but competing for similar recruiting pools. Any
sense of unfair tactics could really get under one’s
