Default Shakehand Grip

Right now when I play ping-pong, I more or less alternate between backhand
and forehand shakehand grips, prefering one over the other for the majority
of the play session for a given day, and switching back and forth a little
in the middle of play. But I'd like to get rid of being weak and always
having to chop or push with the weaker side, so I'd like to use a neutral
grip, but whenever I try it, I always get frustrated at how weak BOTH sides
are. Can anyone give me any tips, or should I wait until I get advanced
strokes like looping down? Thanks.

A new grip is like a new ball cap...feels funny to begin with
(usually) but then after a few days feels like its been apart of your
head for a lifetime. You will find that when you find a grip which is
a compromise between the fh and the bh that after a while it will most
assuredly feel comfortable. Walk around with the racket in your hand
everywhere you go....ala...Forest Gump. Your comfort level will
increase. If that doesnt work, switch to penhold. If neither of those
suggestions work for you simply quit the sport and take up darts.

tom...to be most specific, what you should practice is developing the
muscles in your hand. for instance, find your comfortable fh grip
and take note of the pressure points in your hand you use to grip the
racket....now, keeping the same grip turn your hand over for the
bh....feels uncomfortable right? the trick is to develop the now
undeveloped muscles in the hand that would allow for you to deliver bh
shots with the same grip you use for the fh side. by using pressure on
your forefinger and fleshy part of the hand below the pinky finger you
should be able to use the exact same grip for the bh as for the
comfortable fh. try to get to a robot and set the range for
bh/fh...and keep hitting until the bh becomes comfortable. do this
every day for 1 hr and in about a week you will have discovered some
new muscles in your hand hitherto undiscovered....now you can hit the
fh and the bh with the exact same grip and it feel relatively
comfortable (on the bh side). having said all that you should also
REVERSE the process and find your most comfortable bh grip then turn
your hand over to the fh side and start hitting using that grip...the
fh will feel uncomfortable for a while but you will develop new
pressure points that will enable you to comfortable hit from both
sides. it all comes down to developing as many muscles as you can in
the hand.
