opposed to NNTP servers?

I think nntp servers are often difficult for some users to configure and not
available to others.

I don't think that many ever came through Google as it was to slow to carry on
a normal chat like conversation.

Deja News was simple and easy to use for most and showed postings in a fairly
timely manner.

I think it affected this an many other newsgroups when it disappeared.

Most people can filter out what they consider garbage posts.

I think it's a bigger problem if they can't carry on a conversation without a
frustrating wait.

Whoa, what a neat way to check out the history of r.s.t-t. What I did
not realize was the quality of players that were on the group in the
early days. We had Huazhang Xu [Former Chinese player/partner of Cheng
Yinghua], Khoa (Paul) Nguyen [current USA olympian], and Lyne Dejardins
[Canadian women's team] posting.

Rec.sport.table-tennis was overrun by "trolls" posting large numbers
of "fasle topic" articles using a variety of different pseudo-names
(sockpuppets).

The other tt discussion groups out there are moderated, which means
that offensive or inappropriate material is removed. Since the
"trolls", many posters and readers have gone to the moderated groups
becuase the amount of "troll-posting" is minimal.

r.s.t-t is completely unmoderated, which means there is no censorship
of anything - unless you violate your isp/webservers/google's policy
of use. Since it is unmoderated, r.s.t-t has sometimes become a place
for disgruntled posters from moderated discussion boards to come and
vent frustration that their inappropriate posts are being deleted.

Nevertheless, perhaps it is a nice time to start fresh again.

Hey, Hey!! I am the second leading poster of All Time!! Behind Larry
and ahead of ... Larry! ;-)

See what can happen when you keep the same email addy for 6 or 8 years? ;-)

More than my 4000 postings, how many times fo you think I've viewed
r.s.t-t? Several times daily since 1998 is not trifling as a newsgroup commitment.

Speaking of commitment, it was the obscenity (and sheer volume)
introduced by Srinivas Janardhanan that trashed the group's utility. It
became difficult for readers to follow discussions as he changed ID's to
avoid killfiles. When readers left, there was no point in attempting
discussion or even posting news announcements about tournaments,
tryouts, clubs or equipment. ;-/

Rick Anderson sort of ran this unmoderated group into the ground and it
was hard to wade through his repeated and boring nonsense/racist/vulgar
postings. Most people seriously interested in talking about TT ended
up at about.com or USATT's new forum, and the moderators filter out the
waste for you.
