Thank you for posting this Brad. I've never had tennis elbow (being such a
sweet striker of the ball), but I'm sure this post will help many a club
hacker.

I know you're kidding, but the incidence of tennis elbow isn't
necessarily linked to being a club hacker or having a stroke flaw. In
fact, may people suffer from it who've never played tennis. Many pros
fight through it at some point. Pat Rafter, for one.

It's an overuse injury, and certain people are more prone to it than
others. I'm sure you can increase your odds of getting it by being an
un-sweet striker of the ball, but sweet strikers are not excluded from
having it, not by a long shot.

Many years ago I had TE, and found that lifting a fairly heavy weight
backhanded helped a lot.

elbow

real hope

tennis elbow,

For a while I had TE as well, from twisting my wrist during my
backhand. Once I stopped that, the TE went away.

A few years back Tennis ran (briefly) a series it called "Ask The Trainer"
and the first question it took up was what to do about TE.

The answer (by an ATP tour professional) was to build up one's arm strength,
the reason he claimed he saw so little of it with ATP players.

Indeed, elsewhere Tennis has claimed overall arm weakness is the true source
of TE, not poor stroke technique as has so long been taught.

FWIW.

To be sure, there's been far less mystery about HOW you get it than how
you get RID of it. The tendon is injured by stress. Tendons are more
or less pliable, brittle, strong, weak according to the genetic code
you've been dealt. The way to screw them up is to use them. Some
people will never develop tendinitis no matter what. Some get it from
brushing their teeth too much.

It's tempting to accept that having "strong arms" is an effective
preventative, but GETTING "strong arms" requires a great deal of use of
the tendon, and if you're prone to tendinitis this plan could be a
surefire way to invite it.

Once injured the mystery of the tendon really gets good. Again, there
is a wide range of individual responses, some people heal faster than
others. But unlike most other body parts, tendons tend to stay in a
chronic cycle of pain and inflammation for a long time, and no one has
ever been able to say how to fix it.

The facts have long been thus:

You can prevent tendinitis two ways: Never use your elbow. Have tennis
elbow resistant genes.

You can fix tennis elbow only one way: Be one of the lucky few in which
it just gets better on its own.

No treatment protocol has ever been demonstrated to be more effective
than any other.

Until now. This shockwave therapy has changed the face of chronic
tendinitis's grip on the unfortunates who live with it.

I feel I was pretty lucky with the genes, but, after having played tennis
for about 20 years without
any TE symptoms, I have just developed it recently! The wear and tear of 20
years - I suppose
the genes can only take you so far.

What are the success rates/percentages (sorry if you already posted them)?
Does 'back to normal' mean total healing (100%)?

And that's just the point. Some people do get better after acupuncture
treatment. About the same number as those who get better from placebo.
Or steroid injection. Or physical therapy.

Physical therapy and cortisone shots ARE effective for some things, and
are not pseudoscience. They've just never been shown to be effective in
treating tennis elbow. You may as well save the money and howl at the
moon.
