Is Karl mad enough to go into the HOF as a Laker?
http://www.pe.com/sports/lakers/note..._lakers_notes_ 29.58086.html Malone blasts 'no class' Jazz 12:48 AM PST on Thursday, January 29, 2004 By BRODERICK TURNER / The Press-Enterprise LOS ANGELES - Karl Malone leaned back in his chair, propped his feet up on his locker and proceeded to lambaste the Jazz and Utah owner Larry Miller for using an impersonator to mock him during Saturday night's game in Salt Lake City. Wearing a black shirt and white sweats, Malone looked at the media gathered before him and talked about how his plan always had been not to talk about the Jazz after spending the first 18 years of his career there. But Malone said the Jazz organization showed "no class" for having the Bear, the team mascot, do a skit in which a telephone rang and the voice on the end other end sounded like Malone saying he wanted to "come home." Malone, on the injured list with a sprained right knee, was at his ranch in Arkansas Saturday night, but heard about the skit from his teammates and friends in Utah. Making matters worse for Malone was when the Jazz did the skit again, the phone ringing and having Miller answer with a cellphone while sitting courtside. The Malone impersonator told Miller he wanted to come home. Miller took the phone from his ear and threw it on the court. Malone said an apology came from the Bear in a call to his wife. He was asked if he'd accept an apology from Miller. "I don't want one now," Malone said. "I'm from the old school. That's what you think about what you say before you say it. I've thought about this ... I don't want a call from him. You said what you said and it's irrelevant now. I left there the way I wanted to leave, by doing it with class ... "After 18 years, for them to stoop to that kind of level, that's no class. And that's something that I'll never forget." Malone said he was even more upset that the Jazz took it further. The Malone impersonator went on to say how he didn't have it as bad as "Ko..." He stopped there, but obviously the reference was to Kobe Bryant, who has been charged with felony sexual assault. "They don't know this kid. This is a great kid," Malone said. "For them to put that out there like that or to say that about him, that's disrespectful, and I'll never, ever forgive them for that. Ever, in my life .... "There's no place in there for this. The way I left and after 18 years and I get that ... The decision I made, I always knew it was the right thing to do, but after stuff like that, it just shows it was the right thing to do." Malone said he once wondered why Roger Clemens said he wouldn't go into the Baseball Hall of Fame as a Boston Red Sox, the team he spent most of his career with. Malone hinted that he might not go into the Hall of Fame as a Jazz. "I know the chain of command," Malone said. "For somebody to pull a skit like that, they have to get approved by the front office, and they got approved because the Bear told us that he got approved." The Lakers return to Utah for a game March 8, but Malone still may not be ready to play. "I'm going to Utah on the 8th, whether I'm playing or not," Malone said. "Then bring it on." The Lakers said the injury report has changed with Malone, but that he is expected back around mid-March. "It's a serious injury," Malone said. "I'm trying to get better." Also: With the Suns waiving forward/center Scott Williams Wednesday, Lakers coach Phil Jackson said they'll have interest in the big man. Williams won three NBA championships with the Bulls with Jackson. |
