Default Burke's quote on Fedorov in today's Sun

I really makes little difference, Fed fed does not have what it takes to
make the NHL even on an expansion team, his skill is very overrated 23 pts
in 50 AHL games is not good enough for a player who is that weak
defensively.

Your ' overrated ' comment relating it to his production is out to lunch. In
01-02 he suffered a potentially career ending eye injury. Then last season
he played all year with a wrist injury until he just couldn't go any more, and
told the club he's hurting the team and they should put someone in who can
play. Had it operated on and returned for the final 3 games of the playoffs,
averaging a point a game. No one who has ever seen him could possibly
say he doesn't have what it takes to make the bigs. Even Burke the ass
admits he's got the tools.

As for his weak defensive play ? A crock on many levels. Three years ago
before his injuries he was a plus 25 with Sudbury. In the 7 games he got
with the Canucks he played good defense and was even in the +/-.

For those of you that followed the Grizzlies, any comparison of Federov in
terms of talent and missed opportunities to Lawrence Moten?

I saw him in Vancouver and was. His skating and moves alone for a guy
that big was enough to tell me all I needed to know.

Hmmm. Interesting defense. Finishing 30th in the league ahead of
573 other players, and 2nd [ 2 behind ] teammate Semenov isn't a
positive comment on his defensive play ? I guess his teammate,
Ryan Courtney's minus 53 says nothing either ? :-) [ how does a guy
get to minus 53 ? ].

There were only 3 guys in the + 20's, 5 in the teens, and the rest single
digit or minus.

With all due respect, this whole thing is all Burke bullshit. Going public
ragging on him is for one and only one purpose, to set the stage justifying
why Fedor isn't playing with the Canucks, should that be the case. It's
designed to preempt any public criticism of him for not having the skill in
the lineup the fans want to see. If Fedor plays and plays well, Burke's set
himself up for being the genius motivator and will accept all accolades.
He's maneuvered himself into a win win situation.

There have always been, and always will be players who are motivated by
different things. Players who have to be rode, pampered, reinforced, left
alone, challenged, stroked, etc. A good coach and management recognizes
what works best for each player, and tries to apply that approach.

There is nothing positive accomplished by a public humiliation. Nothing
which could be achieved publicly couldn't be much more effective done
in the room in the office, or over a beer. All embarrassing the player in
public does is elicit a ' fuck you ' behind closed doors, and a ' what an
asshole to do that ' from his teammates.

As for Fedorov's quote, what else can he say publicly ? A skeptic might have
asked, how can it be working seeing as it's the off season ? His words made
your golf better ?

MOTEN !!!!!!!!!!!! My all time favorite Grizz I can't believe someone else
sees the similarity. Poetry in Moten was screwed, blued and tattooed
by Lurch and Jackson.

I recall a game Moten played [ against the Clippers ? ] where he came in and
was great. He was doing everything to get them back from being down a ton.
He brought the team back virtually single handed [ I think he finished with
23 pts ] and they were either tied or down a point with the Grizz having the
inball at mid court with a few seconds left. Moten went to inbound the ball
and made a rookie type mistake and turned it over [ a good defensive play
on their part ] and the Grizz lost. But that's not the story. The story is he
never saw a SINGLE SECOND of floor time the next game.

Moten was a fantastically gifted athlete. Smooth as smooth can be, but
the way he was handled here totally dialed his head and destroyed him.

That is what I fear Burke and Crow are doing to Fedor. Last season he had
a great camp, a great attitude and work ethic, deserved to be with the club to
start the season, was, played good [ certainly as good or better than many ],
and got 7 lousy games, only to be sent to oblivion never to be seen again.

I agree and that is why Burke has taken the approach he did. It appears to
be the only way to reach the kid. Do you really think he would have singled
out Federov (the only player he's really been this hard on since he's been
GM) if he didn't think it was the best approach?

Jim . . . simply put, if Fedorov makes heads turn (including those on the
coaching staff and in management) and sticks in the lineup this season, then
Burke's approach will have worked. Federov has to prove he's an NHL player.
He has to prove it to me and to everyone else who wants to see this kid
succeed. Only Federov can make it happen. You know perfectly well he will
not be awarded a free ride. If Federov thought he was going to be a lock to
make the NHL and didn't have to do more than dipsy doodle on the ice, he
grossly misunderstood what it took. If he was in danger of sinking into a
hinterland of underachievement and it took a public lashing to rescue him,
then he's going to be better off for it in the end. We will too for that
matter.

Moten never got screwed by Winters, he screwed himself by being a shitty pro
player. He's the all time leading scorer at Syracuse, and all this got him
was a 2nd round selection. He was turnover prone, looked lost on the
offensive sets, and defense was awful. If he was so good, then come he never
played for another NBA team (I think he got waived after being traded to the
Wiz), and so far has made his career in the CBA/NBA minor league/Europe?

His bro has the tools- obviously. I wonder if the not showing up fairly regularly
is a genetic thing with the Fedorovs? When his bro did show up...jeezsus
kee-rist. Well, you've seen it. But ya just never knew... most disconcerting.
