I have no evidence to back this up, but I would say that it might be
that Soccer is viewed as a man's sport throughtout most of the world.
Hockey was the same way here until the last few years. I remember the
game of Ringette being played by girls when I was growing up, but very
few actually played hockey. If they did. they were on a boy's team and
very quickly dismissed as bull dykes.

Perhaps there are fewer countries were women are encouraged to play
soccer and this might explain the advantage that the Canada and US
women have over a lot of soccer dominant countires (Argentina, Brazil,
England, Mexico, ...)

Or maybe our ladies just kick ass.
