Detroit looking to free itself from contract
ESPN.com news services
DETROIT -- Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland has thought about
waiving goalkeeper Curtis Joseph, in light of Dominik Hasek's return to the
club, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday.
According to the report, Holland believes Joseph would be picked up by
another team, despite his $8 million contract for each of the next two
seasons. If another team picks up Joseph off of waivers, the Red Wings would
be relieved of Joseph's contract.
Holland's preference, according to the paper, continues to be trading
Joseph, so Detroit gets something in return. Holland told the paper he has
had some "interesting conversations" with other clubs regarding Joseph, but
did not elaborate.
Joseph became expendable when Hasek announced his return to Detroit in July
after a one-year retirement. Hasek was the starting goaltender when the Red
Wings won the Stanley Cup in 2002, defeating the Carolina Hurricanes in the
finals.
