Default Rule Call - Saving a Bad Hit Outside the Playing Area

The ball is hit or set by a teamate and goes outside the playing area
on my side of the net. Can I save the ball if I hit it either to
another teamate within the 3 hit limit or over the net to the opposing
team?

Perhaps you should define what you mean my "playing area". Generally there
is an area where you are allowed to play and if you go outside that area
to play the ball, the play will be whistled dead. However that area includes
area outside the boundry lines of the court so that if a ball isn't shanked
too far off the court you can still make plays on it.

Important question: Where are you in relation to the playing area?

If you have a body part in contact with the legal playing area while
reaching outside of teh playable area to make this play, yes.

If not, the play is whistled dead and the rally awarded t oyour
opponents as soon as you contact the ball without having a body part
in contact with the playable area.

Playable area should be clarified and defined by the first official
during the pre-match captains meeting/coin toss.

Best Regards,

begin quoting Todd Haverkos <tdh@vbref.org>:

This is correct, but only for some local rulesets, esp. in USA. FIVB
rules which apply nearly everywhere in the world ********ly allow to
play outside the playing area on your own risk. (Different from the
USA, we have a reasonable jurisprudence here in Germany where Amok
running attorneys have no chance when they try to sue referees or sport
federations when players hurt themselves when leaving the playing
area.)

Using FIVB rules, the playing area is rectangular and means court and
free zone. (The bench is not part of the free zone.) You have to serve
from within service zone, i.e. from within the playing area, but that
is neary the only thing where the boundaries of the playing area are
important.

Kind regards
