It may seem silly to players and TV viewers, but down ref, officially score, or keeps stats for beach volleyball with players you don't know by first name (and who change sides every 7 points) -- do that just once and it'll all become exceedingly clear that having 1/2 designators really really helps facilitate the match. It's also remarkably common that the players don't know who's serving next, especially after a long rally. Best Regards, -- Todd Haverkos tdh@vbref.org http://www.vbref.org/ |

Looks like we have another stereotype to debunk about the sport. 8-) Actually, 3/4 of your US Olympic beach volleyball players have brown hair. Kerri Walsh and Dax Holdren are the only blondes of the 8. Stein...well, kinda. And the rest of the Olympic field is, well, not from California. Correct. There are also statisticians, and media, commentators, and reporters from multiple countries, all of whom are less likely to confuse one hat-wearing, sunglass-wearing player from another if they have numbers on their back that correspond to something in the official program. 8-) The numbers facilitate a lot of things. The AVP tour doesn't use numbers, but that's a much closer community. -- Todd Haverkos tdh@vbref.org http://www.vbref.org/ |
