Default Peter Gammons: Nats to trade a pitcher for an outfielder?

Peters Gammons reported that the Nationals are pleased with the progress
made by Tony Armas Jr., John Peterson and Tomo Ohka in spring training. As
a result, the team may be able "to move a starting pitcher in a deal for a
productive outfielder."

The Nats are looking for a leadoff quality hitter who can play the outfield.

See: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/gammons/story?id=2011372

I suspect that Livan Hernandez will stay put, so that leaves Zach Day and
Esteban Loaiza as trade bait. I'm guessing Zach Day is the candidate. I
also think that Day is a better pitcher than he has shown this spring, so he
may be able to provide the team with something of value in return if there
is another team looking for a pitcher.

Gammons reported last week that Endy Chavez and Terrmel Sledge are also
being offered around in possible trade discussions.

At least a good sign that they realize Endy Chavez is teh ****.

What they really need is prospects; Livan Hernandez and Vidro HAVE to get
traded during the season to a contender for some prospects.....

Just for fun, imagine trading the entire Washington Nationals starting
lineup for the starting lineup of the Pawtucket Red Sox (whatever that might
be at the end of spring training). It is fun to consider which team would
do better in the National League East...

If you are in a trading mood, I'd go for trading Vidro before Hernandez.
Position players are expendable. A dependable starting pitcher is hard to
find.

Livan Hernandez will likely no longer be pitching or pitching effectively by
the time the Nationals are ready to contend. Everybody who is any good who
fits that criteria needs to be traded ASAP.

People need to get out of the mindset of giving a crap about winning ANY
games at all this year or next year. I'd be thrilled if we traded so many
people for prospects that the Nats lost 120 games next year. Otherwise
you'll end up with a nice 75 win team for eternity, like the Orioles.
